There is a new coffee shop / restaurant in East Nashville. I drove by Sky Blue last week while looking for office space. It wasn’t open yet, but as I was thinking about where to get a bite and a cup of joe this morning I thought I would check in and see. Apparently they opened yesterday. It could be that I am the first blogger ever to visit this fine establishment, so I thought I would go ahead and share my thoughts.
Sky Bistro is located at 700 Fatherland St in East Nashville. This location used to be some sort of wine bar that I never visited and didn’t last very long. It is a really nice space, but it is a little hard to find nestled between half a million dollar Victorian homes and the projects.
There doesn’t seem to be any wireless access here which is unusual for a coffee shop, but not so unusual for a bistro. Then again, coffee shops don’t usually have table service either. They have a basic short-order menu for breakfast as well as some light and healthy options. I had a couple of eggs over-easy and they were cooked perfect.
I will be back.
UPDATE: There is some talk about Sky Blue Bistro and Coffee on the East Nashville Google Group (formerly known as the East Nashville List Serv). See the other reviews.
From Jupiter Research:
So, apparently, the 2009-2010 version of Windows will still not have the next-gen file system I was writing about more than 10 years ago — when “Cairo” was the lead codename — let alone a microkernel with modules for OS “personalities” and compatibility.
The general public pretty much knows that Vista sucks and it doesn’t sound like the next version of Windows will be much better. Normally I would be recommending the world switch to Macs, but we all know that is not going to happen. Macs will continue to grow in popularity, but there are lots of computers out there that need an upgraded OS and without an about face from The Steve, OSX is not for them.
When I first switched to OSX from Linux I was excited about having Unix together with Microsoft Office. As I find myself moving closer and closer to ditching MS Office for web-based offerings the novelty of Unix with MS Office is wearing off (not to mention that virtualization has come a long way since I switched). I am not ready to switch just yet, but I could be ready by the time I purchase my next laptop. (If history is any indication then I will purchase a new laptop sometime late this Fall).
I don’t know that I have said this before, but my MacBook Pro is not as well made as my old PowerBook G4. There are some bugs with my MBP and it has felt a little cheaper since the day I took it out of the box. Sure, I prefer it to the G4 since it is Intel and has a faster processor and all that, but I think the quality is going down.
I do like many of the updates that I got with the upgrade to Leopard. Some of those innovations came from Linux (multiple desktops, dashboard widgets, etc). KDE4 looks like a big improvement and I like the roadmap of KDE.
Maybe it has just been too long since I have fought with a kernel compile or a linux package management system, but I am thinking that the time for linux to catch on in the consumer market is now. The geeks led the growth of Macs since OSX, will they do the same for Linux? If there is a reason for them to leave OSX then I believe the will, and I am getting a little disenchanted.
I just saw a classic posting on Craigslist. It is probably not very interesting to non-developers. Some entrepreneurs will even think it sounds like a good deal. However, every coder with at least 1 project under their belt has met this guy:
I NEED A COLLEGE STUDENT WHO IS A COMPUTER GENIUS TO PARTNER WITH ME. SOMEONE THAT CAN AFFORD THE TIME AND EFFORT TO PUT INTO A HUGE MUSIC WEBSITE THAT WILL TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM. I CAN NOT PAY, BUT I HAVE THE IDEA, THE DOMAIN NAME, AND THE COPYWRITE IF YOU WANT TO WORK WITH ME I WILL MAKE YOU A PARTNER WITH A PERCENTAGE AGREED BY BOTH PARTIES. THIS IS A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR IDEA!
YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE CAPABILITIES TO BUILD A SITE THAT CAN BECOME THE NEXT MY SPACE (ONLY BETTER). IF YOU HAVE THAT KNOWLEDGE PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP!
OMG!!! Really?!?!? You have an idea of how to make MySpace better?!?! (Hint: everyone who has ever used MySpace has an idea of how to make it better)
The problem is that just by throwing this offer out there demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of what it takes to create “The Next MySpace”. Let alone the luck component.
It is tempting to respond to him and offer to do it for a 99/1 split (with me getting the 99% share). The thing is, even then it is not worth it.
There are good ideas out there, and I don’t want to discount the potential for a couple of people to come together and create something huge. It can happen. It just doesn’t happen like this.
BTW, when he says he has “THE COPYWRITE”, does he mean that he is a copywriter and can provide the copy for the site? Or does he mean that he owns a copyright for the name of this new brilliant application? I am betting on copyright because I would be shocked if he is actually planning on doing any real work like copywriting.
Last week I was talking with Marcus about the whole Yahoo! / Microsoft non-deal. We came to the conclusion that Yahoo! was asking for an unjustifiable price because they had realized that Yahoo! does not have a future. The sales price was all they were ever going to get.
I kinda-sorta followed the Jerry Yang talk today via twitter. Michael Arrington summed up his thoughts on the matter. From what he says I think we were pretty spot on and that Yahoo! is done.
It is a real shame too. Yahoo made some great acquisitions. If they had been able to pull them together and integrate in the obvious ways then this would have been different.
On a whim I decided to test my soon-to-be first grader to see if he understood basic algebra. I first asked him “If something minus 4 equals 5, what is something?” He took a couple of seconds and responded “9″. I asked a few more, including “Something minus 2 plus 3 equals 5″. It took a while, but he gave the correct answer of 4.
He is not even in first grade yet and understands multiplication (proficient in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 9s, and 10s) and basic algebra. I am genuinely concerned that keeping him in Nashville public schools will hinder his education. When I mentioned this to my dad he told me that his first calculus class was in 7th grade.
Part of the problem is “special needs” education and No Child Left Behind. Special needs education is funded by the federal government, but they do not consider advanced learners as having a special need. Tennessee schools do define advanced learners as having a special need, which makes it an unfunded mandate. By lowering the bar there will be more students who are above the curriculum. This will result in bored kids and more behavioral problems. That is going to be bad for everyone.
