What’s on your Mac?
I no longer have Powerbook envy, so now what do I do? I am setting this up for development (Java, PHP, Perl, MySQL, PostgreSQL, … ?python?, ?.NET?).
I downloaded xCode and Firefox. I have VirtualPC with WinXP (soon Linux too) but I am going to use OS X the vast majority of the time. What are the must-haves?
Please help an OS X newbie out and comment with some pointers.

I’m a long time BBEdit user and they’ve just recently starting giving their TextWrangler editor (a scaled down, but still very good editor) away for the download. I’d highly suggest giving it a try. I’ve been keeping an eye on textmate, but just don’t feel that it’s there yet
I like darwinports for package installation and maintenance, especially the php5 port. FWIW, darwinports is headed up by Jordan Hubbard of FreeBSD fame.
Non-development stuff: I like iPulse for system monitoring. A cool little widget that’ll keep you up to speed with the status of your machine. NetNewsWire is really good for RSS feed subscription and I love MarsEdit for blog entry composition and editing.
That’s it off the top of my head. If I think of anything else, I’ll add it later.
On preview: my urls were being stripped, so you’ll need to Google for the software listed.
Transmit from Panic is a great all purpose ftp client. Cocktail automates a lot general maintanence. MacTracker knows all about crappy old macs that you wanna fix up and put Yellow Dog Linux on.
Hope this helps!
Jim
Big big fan of BBEdit. Could not survive without it. The binaries for PHP, MySQL, et. al. from Marc Liyanage are super-easy to install. Firefox is a good companion to Safari, Thunderbird (IMO) handles large columes of email better than Mail.app. That’s about it, everything else is secondary, or comes with the Mac (yay iTunes!).
FUGU is good for secure file transfer, Fink is good when you start missing KDE, BBEdit is pretty cool, but I am leaning to love vi so…
I hear NewsFire is off the chain: http://www.newsfirerss.com/
Reason or GarageBand is dope for music. Especially with that new keyboard you got.
What other kind of apps are you looking for?
