Phone As Modem

by Jackson Miller on October 18th, 2006

Does anyone out in the blogosphere use phone as modem with their Sprint service? I am wondering if it is worth it to have a cellular PC card or if phone as modem is almost as fast.

Yes, I do. However, I have the “power vision” service from Sprint (EvDO) and have a phone w/ bluetooth that synchs up w/ my computer (however, there is a USB way to do it, as well). It’s not like having a stable wifi connection, but it’s cheaper than paying for a connection in a hotel room. Checking email, blogs, etc., it’s fine — downloading files, bad.

At my new fancy pants “actual job” they hooked me up with a Verizon Treo 700p. It’s the first “smart phone” I’ve had that didn’t make me want to strangle the designers with my bare hands. Also, it does EVDO & DUN via Bluetooth with my MacBook Pro like butter. Seriously. As in, I was in Cabo San Lucas this past week, on the beach, in mexico, using DUN to connect to the interwebs and VPN and whatnot. Is it lightning fast? No. Do I get about 200K? Yes. Do I actually need more than 200K for “actual work”? Not by a long shot. I tell you, it’s like crazy vooodoo magic.

We should get together some time!
