Opportunity Knocks

by Jackson Miller on September 18th, 2006

When opportunity knocks, do you answer?

A while back i decided that I am an ‘opportunist’. That is a word that is usually prescribed a negative connotation. the thing is I like to think that I am the exception to the rule:

opportunism: the art, policy, or practice of taking advantage of opportunities or circumstances often with little regard for principles or consequences

I pay deep attention to the consequences of my decisions. This is a relatively recent development that came from being the sole provider for a family. My principles are essentially to take care of my family first, my community next, and the world finally. Yet I like to think that my ability to navigate the often turbulent rapids of opportunity is somewhat artful. I have had my fair share of practice.

The question is not whether or not I should take advantage of opportunities as they come my way; the question is which opportunities to take advantage of.

I was talking to my dad the other day when he said something about not having to take opportunities just because they are there. I guess you gotta know when to hold them and know when to fold them.
