Food Equals Mama?

by Jackson Miller on October 11th, 2002

Possibly the cutest thing that Zavier has done to date is insisting that “mama” is food. “Where did that come “ask? Read on to find out!

When Zavier first started eating babyfood at 6 months he would chatter away saying things like “dada” or “baba”, but no “mama”. Since he hadn’t said “mama” yet, I worked really hard to get him to say it. I said the word all the time, but realize now that I must have said it a lot while I was feeding him.

I remember him chattering away during his feedings, so I would give him a bite and say “ma-ma” not thinking he would associate food and the word. Well, to my amazement he started saying “mama” back to me and hasn’t stopped – whenever he’s hungry that is. I guess he’s not too far off considering there was a time when I was his sole source for food…

The whole thing is adorable, but we are trying to disassociate the food-mama thing by using words like”eat” and “food” while we feed him. He’s now 9 months old and absorbing everything! He can do all of the motions for “patty-cake” and moves his head to the rhythm whenever music comes on and even smacks his lips to give kisses, so I am sure it’ll only be a matter of time before he starts saying “eat”.
