The Time For Linux is Now

From Jupiter Research:

So, apparently, the 2009-2010 version of Windows will still not have the next-gen file system I was writing about more than 10 years ago — when “Cairo” was the lead codename — let alone a microkernel with modules for OS “personalities” and compatibility.

The general public pretty much knows that Vista sucks and it [...]

When The Future Looks Bleak

Last week I was talking with Marcus about the whole Yahoo! / Microsoft non-deal. We came to the conclusion that Yahoo! was asking for an unjustifiable price because they had realized that Yahoo! does not have a future. The sales price was all they were ever going to get.
I kinda-sorta followed the Jerry Yang talk [...]

The Great Twitter Debate of 2008

There is a huge debate going on in all corners of twitter-land. This is not the debate about The Business Model or Rails Is Slow. This is not even the debate about Decentralize Twitter. It is a debate that doesn’t make the front page of TechMeme and you won’t find much about it in the [...]

Location Specific Behavior

I was just perusing the list of the top 50 applications submitted to the Andriod Developer Challenge. As Engadget pointed out, many of the applications are Location Based Services. That piqued my interest since I have felt location-aware mobile applications are running way behind schedule (the imaginary schedule I setup in my head based on [...]

Debating the iPhone

Why I want a 3G iPhone:

3G
Syncs well with my laptop
iPhone + Truck = hands free music and phone (music pause on incoming call)
16GB + in my pocket
etc

Why I don’t want an iPhone:

G4 Powerbook
iMac
MacBook Pro
2 iPods
Airport Extreme
Apple TV
+ accessories

I am a little hesitant to walk headlong into increased vendor dependance. Will that stop me? Doubtful.

Mobile Insanity

The wireless handset (i.e. cellphone) market is getting absolutely insane just in time for the “economic stimulus checks” to start arriving. I am not using “insane” as some sort of bad-meaning-good euphemism; I really think people are losing some mental stability.
For those living under a rock, the next generation of the iPhone is going [...]

Sprint is Still Losing Customers

At the end of last year I wrote Why Sprint is Losing Customers (and market share). The post detailed how I felt Sprint was providing the wrong kinds of incentive for their business to be successful. The post actually got talked about on a few finance sites as Sprint’s stock continued to fall throughout Q1 [...]

Participating: Pandora’s Box

People used to be content with being talked at, lectured to, and entertained; now people seem discontent unless they are participating and engaged. The world has changed and there is no going back. Companies that used to make a living from talking at, lecturing, and entertaining need to adapt or they will eventually become irrelevant.
I [...]

Google Spreadsheets Are Better Than Microsoft Excel

That title is a pretty bold statement.
I could write a long post about how document sharing, collaborative editing, integration with Google Gadgets, etc are all game changing features. The thing is, that post would take too long to write and I don’t have that time right now. Luckily I can back up my claim with [...]

Electric Heat

For the past couple of years I have had a question running around in my head and it won’t go away. Maybe by posting it here someone can point me in the right direction to understand it.
If every rooftop in a city was covered with solar panels, would it reduce the overall temperature of the [...]
