Predicting the Next Supreme Court Justice
I am not really qualified to make such a prediction, but that has never stopped me before.
The women of the world are going to want to make sure their concerns are still represented*. With an approval rating about as low as ever, Bush is not going to be able to piss off half of the population**. A woman left the bench and another woman will be appointed. (That is my first prediction).
My second prediction is that the nominee will come from the pool of potential nominees that CNN has listed here. I don’t know much about who the leading religious neo-cons are, let alone the ones to whom Bush owes a favor. I am just going to piggy-back on the hard work that I assume CNN has done to pick a list of potential nominees.
There are only two women on CNN’s list of nominees: Janice Brown and Edith H Jones. Janice Brown was just appointed to the US Court of Appeals in DC this year. That is a seat that Republicans have wanted for a long time, and they don’t want to have to risk another Senate confirmation for that post, so she is ruled out. That means…
Bush will nominate Edith H Jones to the US Supreme Court. That is my prediction. It is the best I got. Be sure to come back and gloat if/when I am wrong.
* a large part of women’s concerns in relation to the Supreme Court have to do with abortion and it is unlikely that Bush will nominate someone that supports that concern
** Bush is completely capable if pissing off half of his supporters, so maybe ‘willing’ is a better word

According to Drudge, Senator Charle Shumer was overheard during a long cellphone conversation saying the following:
Jackson Miller makes his prediction on the next Supreme Court justice nominee….
Laura Bush has encouraged her husband to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by O’Conner. I tend to agree with her (for once). Partially because it fits my prediction.
