I admit that I like mobile devices a little much. Tomorrow we may hear more about the 3G iPhone that will be released later this year. The iPhone has started a new trend of paying way more for mobile devices than we ever have before. Carrier subsidies are soon to be a thing of the past. The good news is that you can get some really sweet hardware for under $50.
One of the reasons I moved to AT&T was so that I could swap out phones by just changing out the SIM card. I am sick and tired a lugging around a smartphone everywhere I go. On the weekends I don’t need email, internet, heavy SMS, GPS, etc. I just want something small and durable. Something that I can forget to charge all weekend and it won’t die. Something that is not too distracting (I don’t have much restraint with a smartphone in my pocket sometimes).
Of course, I don’t really have a budget for a new phone right now seeing as how I just picked up a Blackberry 8310 (likely the last carrier subsidy I will ever receive). However, if I could pick up the phone I described above for under $50 then I would consider it. If said phone happened to be svelte then I would almost be obligated to pick it up.
Enter the Motorola F3 (available online unlocked for under $50 all day long):
Granted, the Blackberry Curve isn’t nearly as big as my old Palm 700p, and I kinda like having a camera all the time. This Moto would be really great for hitting the open road on my bike, heading out to the lake, playing tag in the park with the kids, and even taking my wife out for a nice dinner (without email).

What a great idea! I lug around a massive T-Mobile MDA for business purposes — I love it, but it doesn’t fit in my evening purse.
I can’t believe I never thought of switching the SIM card to a tiny phone….
And most tiny phones are $200+ and pretty blah. This one is sleek and cheap.
