Thoughts on Digital Movie Downloads

I just saw this headline come across Techmeme:

Microsoft: users don’t want to own downloadable movies

My first thought was “Hogwash! When will Microsoft stop paying for favorable research”.

As I stop to think about it, I think they are generally correct on this one. I do not want to own most movies I watch. Music I want to own, movies not so much. The difference has to do with my tolerance to watch the same movie twice (as opposed to listening to the same song twice).

So how about this:

  • Download a movie for a reasonable price, say $5
  • Watch the movie as many times as I want for a few days, say 4
  • If I choose to purchase the movie within a month of renting it, take my rental fee off the price of the movie
