I have a growing digital subconscious. Have no idea what I am talking about? No worries, it is a term I just made up.
digital subconscious - the applications and processes that are constantly running in the background, without user interaction, to help manage a digital life.
Right now I am listening to iTunes. AudioScrobbler is sending each track to Last.FM as I listen to them. Plaxo is making sure that my Address Book is staying up-to-date (for at least some people). TripIt automatically adds my travel information to my itineraries thanks to a well-placed email alias I set up.
There are also parts of my digital subconscious that helps with publishing information. FaceBook, Plaxo Pulse, and Tumblr are republishing blog posts, pictures, bookmarks, tweets, etc. While I am more likely to subscribe to RSS feeds than to use Plaxo Pulse, there are people in my address book who are able to see what I am publishing because of it.
I am sure there are other parts of my digital subconscious, but I can’t think of them right now, and that is the best part. The existence of a digital subconscious enables me to focus on other things.
