I love flying into or out of New York City at night. Tonight I had a perfect window seat flying out of LaGuardia on a clear night. Here is what I love about it.
- Close to the airport, the only empty space is graveyards and water. At night it is a little hard to tell them apart.
- Of course the skyline is like no other. Flying out of LaGuardia, Midtown is so much more impressive. That may change after the World Trade is rebuilt.
- Central Park is so vast…
- … and the drop buildings on the South and East sides of the park drop off like cliffs.
- The lights in Times Square are ridiculous.
- as you get further away from the city, the buildings seem to get so small. This makes Central Park look even bigger.
- It is impossible to tell where the metropolitan area ends.

I love NYC, too. I proposed to my wife there in 2005. I’ve typically flown out during the day, but I bet you’re right about the evening. What a great city.
I like flying into Western cities such as Las Vegas and Phoenix at night, too. The desert and the mountains provide a stark contrast against the lights of the city as the plane approaches.
