Rethinking Online Presence

I am rethinking my online presence these days. I am not the only one; I have seen lots of other longtime bloggers content generators [succinct word for people who publish parts of their lives online to various servers and have been doing so for a long time].

Twitter has diluted SMS in much the same way that email lists did my inbox. No matter how well-intentioned I am, I can only keep up with so much and still achieve my goals with work, family, business ventures, and self-education. For the past few days I have turned SMS updates from Twitter off, and I have liked it. I have thought about going through and fine-tuning whose updates get sent to SMS, but that is just too much work and is pretty unfulfilling since I am only seeing part of the conversation.

I also want to be posting to other places more regularly. jaxn.org has been neglected as has Flickr. I would still like some kind of mobile location-based presence app. Dopplr is useful, but it doesn’t do what I am looking for. Plazes was buggy the last time I tried it, and required too much effort.

On a related note, I feel like my blog is an either/or kinda of forum. Either I post about the ventures I am involved in or I post about personal stuff. Walking the tightrope of venture blogging while mixing enough personal stuff leaves both watered down. I wish I felt like I could post political thoughts mixed in with information about what I am working on, but I don’t want to risk losing customers (or my job).

So as I try and re-figure it out for the 400th time, I am finding myself pulling back a little bit.

There is a “what goes where” meme that seems to be going on. I hope to participate in it more fully soon.
