New and Improved Jackson Miller: Now With Glasses

Jackson Miller with new glassesI was a nervous wreck when I rode my bike from Nashville to DC and back last month. It was particularly bad in the mountains. A large part of my nerves were because I was having a hard time seeing the turns up ahead (and the stakes are so much higher on a bike).

I started to wonder if maybe I needed glasses. Sure, in hindsight there were all kinds of other clues like headaches, trouble seeing at night, problems with glare, etc. The thing is, I have always had perfect vision. I didn’t think I could really need glasses.

Luckily, my desire to no die a fiery death on my motorcycle proved to be stronger than my delusion that I could never really need glasses (at least not this young).

I had tried to get my eyes checked a couple of times recently, but it didn’t work out. I don’t really have much downtime and it is hard for me to schedule much of anything. (And if we are being honest, I usually put ‘taking care of myself’ at the bottom of the todo list).

On Sunday morning I was at a mall in Grand Rapids, MI. Sabrina had a couple of her cousins meet us there . I realized it was a perfect time to get my eyes checked. The first place didn’t have a Dr on duty, but the second place could see me immediately.

As I sat down in the exam chair I felt like I had just wasted $54. I tried to tell myself that it is better to be safe than sorry, but that $54 could have been put to good use. The first test was some machine that gives a ballpark guess at what the vision problem is. Within 10 seconds of sitting in the chair the doc told me I was far sighted.

What?!?! There must be some mistake! How could that be?! etc, etc

So, now I have to wear glasses. Not just when I read, but when I work on a computer or drive; so, like all the time.

The irony is that I have always wanted to wear glasses. I thought they would make me look smarter. The only time I have not wanted glasses was the moment I learned I needed them.

You’re going to be okay. I’ve worn mine since I was 11. I thought that was too young too.
    Heh.
    You look smashing in them.

Oh wow, I think you look very smart! :)
Seriously, they look great on ya!

I just had to get glasses for the first time recently, as well. I’m still trying to get used to them. I had to get bifocals at the young age of 40! I got progressive lenses so I wouldn’t have to take them off all the time. So it’s weird going from thinking you don’t need them to needing them all the time, isn’t it?

    Wow. Thanks Ivy and Ginger.

I am gonna have to get new glasses to fit my new big head.

And yes Ginger, it is weird needing them all the time. I feel rude talking to people with them on b/c I keep feeling like they are sunglasses.
