Lessons From the Road pt 1

Mountain ViewI rode something in the range of 800-900 miles from Nashville to Washington, DC over the weekend. It is a 600 mile trip, but I took some scenic routes and road The Tail of the Dragon just for fun. I was on the road for about 48 hours, but it feels much longer than that. I never once turned on my laptop; I can’t remember the last time I went 48 hours without turning on my laptop.

  • I opted to “have a good time” instead of “make good time”.
  • A motorcycle is a good conversation starter at gas stations, restaurants, rest stops, campgrounds, etc.
  • Listening to Drum&Bass on a Harley on the interstate is great because the bike adds a constant rumble to the bottom end.
  • People really don’t mean to almost kill motorcyclists, it is just easy to zone off when driving a car. (I was pushed out of my lane by a guy on my right side with his window down. That means his ears were less than 6 feet from my exhaust pipes. WTF?)
  • I go to sleep much earlier without LCD screens, 200 channels, etc distracting me.
  • The key to a good morning when camping in the Fall is a solid plan for getting a fire started as soon as you leave the sleeping bag.
  • It is hard to wash a motorcycle when on the road (you can’t use high pressure water on a motorcycle).
  • I can’t wait to get back on the road on Thursday.
