Life Revisited

One of the greatest things about having a blog is being able to go back in time and read what I was thinking at the time. I can go to similar phases of my life and read the cryptic clues to what I was experiencing.

One year ago today I posted about mobile blogging with flickr. At the time I had taken some pictures of short messages written on paper, almost like micro-blogging (a term I did not know at the time, and may not have existed).

I also wrote about programming language religion. There was no way to know it from my post, but I was posting it because I felt there were bad decisions being made at my work due to programming religion.

Two years ago today Katrina had just happened. I posted about powerlessness as best described in the spiritual “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”. I posted about my connection with that song and New Orleans. I also posted about how fucking ridiculous it was for the Bush Administration to use the Friday before Labor Day weekend, in the midst of a national tragedy, to announce that Karl Rove was the one who outted Valerie Plame.

I actually had 6 posts on September 1, 2005. Then again, I was probably bored at work on the Friday before a long weekend.

In 2004 I didn’t post on September 1st. The most recent post on jaxn.org at the time was a technical post about how I was caching objects in PHP5. At that time the majority of my posts were of about programming. While I still enjoy programming, I don’t post examples and details much anymore. Maybe I should post about how I am taking advantage of MySQL’s query cache for real-time reports in statzen.

On September 1, 2003 I posted about Calypso Cafe as being the best take-out in Nashville. At the time there was no “Nashville blogosphere”. There were bloggers in Nashville and there was a Live Journal community. If I remember correctly it was hard to find much local information at all. There was CitySearch, but it sucked pretty bad. Calypso is still great, but there are better ways to post and find local reviews now.

I didn’t post on September 1, 2002. The most recent posts were from August 26th. We had just moved back to Nashville from Washington, DC. I posted about the great broadband I was using at home (Butler.net), the cool car my aunt and uncle had just given me and my hopes to restore it (a 1969 Volvo p1800), and more

On September 1, 2001 I had just started writing the code turn jaxn.org into some sort of reverse chronological news site with comments and an RSS feed. Oh how times have changed.

I almost bought a P1800 once. By almost, I mean I saw an ad for one and checked it out, but I didn’t have enough money. Those are the best kept secret in cool old spy cars.
