Starting School

On Monday, my oldest son will go to his first day of kindergarten. This brings up a ton of thoughts and emotions for me.

As you may or may not know, I got a great education in public schools in Nashville even if my tenure resulted in my dropping out and getting a GED. I can’t help wondering if my kids will get as good an education. Will they suffer from the same difficulties and limitations that I did?

Then there are thoughts about the inequality in the Nashville public school system. Invest in Your Child is a very bad thing for the common good. Luckily, my kid(s) got in to the magnet school, otherwise I don’t know what we would have done. There are a large number of parents in my neighborhood who are going to have to make a very tough decision over the next few years as their kids start school.

The community that is building in East Nashville may have the ideals, willingness, and cash to change the public school system in Nashville for the better. I have some ideas on how to initiate that change. The ideas and plan is solidifying, but I just don’t have enough time. Hopefully that will all change in the next few months.
