Categorically Untrue

Back when I first started putting bits and bites on the internet, it was important to be listed in the DMOZ directory. To be listed in DMOZ you must choose the single category that best describes your site. At the time, jaxn.org was mostly a place for me to showcase my code (primarily PHP at the time) and talk about development concepts. It was fitting that jaxn.org be listed in the PHP/Personal Pages category. I was one of the first few people in that category.

Things change over time. I never write about PHP anymore. I rarely even write about software development any more. Unfortunately, DMOZ doesn’t account for the possibility of such dramatic change and as such there does not appear to be a way to change the category of a site.

Why do I care? While it is a distinct possibility that this post is the first time many people have ever heard of DMOZ, it is integrated with Google. Additionally, the description of jaxn.org in some Google search results seems to be pulling from the DMOZ listing.

If you want some extra visibility for your site, DMOZ looks to still be relevant. Just be sure you pick a good category; you will have to live with it for a long time.
