There is one application that is more important than all of the other applications on my computer. This didn’t used to be the case, but in the past 2 years this application has become increasingly important.
This is an application that allows me to provide creative and even innovative interfaces to complex and often abstract problems, yet it doesn’t take much work. This is an application that is universally accepted and familiar.
This application connects to just about every database I have ever encountered in my career (and that is a lot). Sure, I am able to solve complex problems in part because I am an SQL ninja, but this application makes it easy to interact with incredibly complex result sets.
As I think about where I want my career (or lack thereof) to go in the next 10 years, this is the one application that I think will still be valuable on a regular basis. Yet, today, I am using this application to help me find a problem in a Java application that I have written for a client.
So what is it? What is the single most important application on my computer?
Microsoft Excel.
