There have been two times I have been listening to Jazz on the radio and decided that I had to buy the cut I was listening to. The first time it was Dan Cray playing Thelonious Monk’s In Walked Bud. I found his CD on CD Baby and it turned out to be a great purchase (still one of my favorite jazz CDs).
Today I was listening to 89.9 in Albuquerque and I heard this amazing quartet. It was a piano, bass, sax, and drums. It was modern and funky, but they were going outside. They were going outside alot. The piano player was obviously influenced by Carla Bley, but the quartet was very funky. I could hear some Monk, but I couldn’t quite pick it out (I caught the song halfway through).
So, I did the same thing I did last time; called my dad who is I knew would appreciate it. He got online, and found the track online. It turns out that it was Steve Coleman playing Round Midnight (another Monk tune). The CD is Steve Coleman and the 5 Elements, Curves of Life. I will be buying it at my earliest opportunity.
So, will I heed Cory’s advice and buy a CD? Nope. I will most likely buy it on iTunes (if it is available). If I need to burn it to a CD I will, but most likely I will just listen to it on my computer and my iPod. iTunes’ ability to share music to other computers on the network pretty much allows me to do everything I need. Does this require a little trust that Apple will not screw me? Yes. Does it save me a trip to a record store? Yes. I don’t even know where I would go now that Tower on West End is closed.
