Get Outta My Way, I Have Mistakes to Make

Halley Suitt is talking about the differences in my generation and the baby boomer generation as it relates to the workforce. She has been watching a special on PBS about Generation Next.

But baby boomers won’t tell the truth about what’s really going on in the workplace. Generation Next is so much smarter, more technologically capable, more flexible and more productive by such an exponential degree, that Traditional Baby Boomer Managers are terrified of them. No one will speak the truth about it. I’m a baby boomer and I will admit it — we’re outgunned.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Halley, but I don’t see it as simple as that. Sure, there are some pretty talented young people who are progressing quickly in this new world, but it is definitely a generational thing. Believe me, I know a bunch of people my age who are sitting around stagnant, not doing much of anything; they are not outgunning many boomers. I also know plenty of boomers who have not been stagnant and who are adapting quite nicely to a world that is changing with increasing velocity.

Of course, the more the world changes the more it stays the same. The older I get, the more respect I have for my elders. Especially the ones who have managed to stay current and have been able to show some adaptability. They have valuable knowledge and experience that I need. I am more than willing to help those boomers with the technology if they will impart a little wisdom my way.

At least for now, we need both the old and the new. Let’s not go sending anyone out to pasture just yet ;)
