Back To Business

This is my last August for at least 20 years where I don’t have a child who will be going to school. I remember the excitement of getting ready to go back to school. I would gather all of my stuff and make sure I was ready to handle the tasks ahead. Then again I have always been into the ’stuff’ associated with the tasks.

The back to school shopping season is the busiest time of year at our store (Plato’s Closet in Cool Springs). I really enjoy working in the store this time of year. The students are so excited to be getting stylish new threads and the parents are grateful to be paying well under what they would if they were shopping in the mall. Every year I see some parents spoil their kids, some parents argue with their kids about the appropriateness of the outfits, and hear all kinds of thoughts on the latest dress codes that will be enforced. My least favorite thing to see is the teenagers in that ‘awkward’ phase struggling with body image while trying on clothes. Luckily we have so many brands most everyone can find something.

This year Tennessee is holding a ‘tax holiday’ for the first time. This has posed some interesting challenges, especially because not everything we sell will be tax-free (jewelry, etc). Everyone is expecting that this will be our biggest weekend of the year.

Since we are going to be so busy this weekend, I will be working in the store. It is increasingly rare that I actually work in the store, but I am looking forward to it. I think I am also going to make a point of live-blogging on Saturday, just for the hell of it. We have a Plato’s blog, but it is more of a website than a blog. This weekend I will actually do some Plato’s blogging.

So if you are out and about in Cool Springs then stop by the store and say hi.
