The Cost of a Dollar

Do you think that a business’s ‘cost to society’ should be factored in to investment decisions? That is a claim that Mike Arrington made today. I think the answer depends on whether or not it is an individual investor.

Personally, I would think twice about about investing in a company that I don’t agree with morally, but that is not everyone’s choice. However, when it is an entity doing the investing (mutual fund, investment partners, etc), I think the ‘cost to society’ should only be considered if that is one of the principles of the entity, and just like with individuals that is not every entity’s decision.
