Kevin Burton has an interesting post suggesting that Microsoft should consider developing on top of Open Source. This is in response to news that Microsoft may be rewriting 60% of Vista. I agree with him 100% but we all know that will never happen.
Last April I also suggested that Microsoft consider building Windows on top of Linux or a Unix variant. I would easily pay for a top quality window manager for Linux, especially if it also meant I could run MS Office and Photoshop. The primary reason I use OSX is that it is a complete environment on top of Unix that allows me to run commercial applications. I need both Unix (ssh, mounting drives, symlinks, root permissions, bash, etc) as well as access to applications used in the business world (MS Office). Currently OSX is my only option.
I wish MS would consider these suggestions, but I have no expectation that it will happen.
