A while back I mentioned that I want gas to be taxed until it is $5 a gallon. Mike Jackson did one better; he wants gas taxed until it is $6 a gallon. Why tax gas? $5 or $6 per gallon would make us about the same as Europe. It would also help the market create fuel efficient cars and better public transportation. If gas was $5 a gallon people would start conserving (hell, even George W bush knows that we need to conserve gas).
By decreasing our dependence on oil it would also ease some of the volatility in the Middle East; it would lower the stakes.
