Last weekend I attended and blogged Justice Sunday II. There was alot of talk about the oppression of the Christians and about illegalizing homosexuality* and abortion. With all of the talk about ‘pro-life’ under the guise of Christianity, capital punishment was noticeably absent from the speeches.
Then last night I watched The Laramie Project with my wife. For those of you who are not familiar with The Laramie Project, it is a re-enacted documentary about the hateful murder of Matthew Shepard and the subsequent trial and reaction. It was such a stark contrast from Justice Sunday II.
The kind of intolerant religious law preached at Justice Sunday II is the same kind of intolerance that motivated the gruesome killing of Matthew. The selfless compassion of Matthew’s parents to spare the life of Matthew’s murderers is the kind of compassion that I read in the Bible, but seemed lacking from Two Rivers Baptist Church during Justice Sunday II. I might watch the movie again tonight so I can grab some quotes.
A very good thing for this country would be a Supreme Court Justice sitting on the bench who is a true follower of Jesus. The first thing he would do is to institute a nationwide moratorium on the death penalty based on the fact that the constitution is supposed to prevent cruel and unusual punishment. No matter the crime or grievance we should never kill.
If you heard the message of Justice Sunday II then you know they are calling for everyone to call their Representatives. Everyone should first watch The Laramie Project to get a better idea about what is at stake. “No one should have to be afraid like that.”
Note: My claim about illegalizing homosexuality comes from calls by multiple speakers at Justice Sunday II to not only illegalize gay marriage from the bench but also to illegalize homosexual sodomy (they did say homosexual sodomy, heterosexual sodomy must be ok)
